Rob Hames

Biography

I am a Wiltshire based artist, painter and prolific sketcher, with a strong link to the surrounding landscape, especially that of Salisbury Plain and the rich Aviation heritage of this area.

Having a background in illustration, publishing, and art teaching, I have a particular focus on a tough yet free approach to drawing and sound painterly methods. I am constantly observing, painting, and sketching across Salisbury Plain and its surrounding areas.

A Full Member GAvA of the prestigious Guild of Aviation Artists, I have been exhibiting with them for over 20 years, and have enjoyed access to various places of aviation interest, receiving several awards including the Frank Wootton Oil Painting Prize, John Blake Drawing Prize, and the SBAC Trophy.
Work has been exhibited at RAF Museum Midlands, Guild Annual Exhibitions at London's Mall Galleries, and the Imperial War Museum Duxford.

Following on from a major solo exhibition at Salisbury's Fisherton Mill Gallery in 2018, further investigations of Wiltshire's landscape saw a whole new body of work exhibited in late 2020 titled #PAUSE that depicted landscape and domestic views created entirely during the long lock-down period. #PAUSE also gave the opportunity to show portraits of #NHSHeroes portraits that I completed during lock down as a thank you to just a handful of our wonderful NHS workers.

The Wiltshire landscape, Salisbury city and surroundings are a continuous source for ongoing artworks, along with the ever present aviation and portrait commissions.

Works are held within private and museum collections in the UK, Europe, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia.
